Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
Close [ x ]
Easy
For people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
Moderate
These programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
Active
For people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately Challenging
For hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
Challenging
Get ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Arrive Hilo, Hawaii Island/Hawaii Volcanoes National Park/Nightime Volcanic Activity Viewing
Breakfast:
Aboard ship
Morning:
Field Trip: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Visit the Jaggar Museum and see overview of Kilauea Caldera. The measuring devices that predict eruptions are available for viewing. Conditions permitting (this area may be closed due to substantially increased eruptive activity), head on through the Southwest Rift Zone to enjoy magnificent views and learn about relatively new lava flows. Upon arrival at the Halemaumau Crater, join a short walk out to the Kilauea Caldera. Continue the drive around the Caldera Rim to Kilauea Iki Crater and Puu Puai, the site of the 1959 eruption.
Lunch:
Deli lunch in local restaurant.
Afternoon:
Depart on bus for Kilauea Visitor Center to see exhibits and displays on volcano formation. Films and videos are also available for viewing. Continue on bus for a walk through Thurston Lava Tube, a natural phenomenon created during volcanic eruptions. Time permitting, we'll go to Devastation Trail. The Trail was formed in 1959 as a result of an eruption from the Iki crater (Iki is Hawaiian for small). The 200 year old forest in this area was buried by falling cinder. Along the way back to the ship, we'll make a brief stop at an orchid nursery that has over 1000 blooming orchids on display - one of the largest collections in Hawaii.
Dinner:
Aboard ship.
Evening:
Free evening to relax and participate in shipboard activities - this evening the ship will sail past Kilauea Volcano's southeastern flank. If conditions permit, we will be able to view molten lava as it flows from its source to the coast. If we're really lucky, we'll see surface flows or at least "skylights" glow from collapsed portions of lava tubes carrying molten lava to the coast. We may also see the reflection of molten lava on the bottom of clouds.

Music, Fire, Dance & Romance
The Sheraton Moana Surfrider has always been home to island musicians. From 1935 to 1975, the live radio show "Hawaii Calls" was broadcast from the Banyan Court stage to bring the sounds of Hawaii to thousands of listeners on the West Coast. Nightly entertainment at the Banyan Court features the musical talents of a variety of local groups. There is no better way to relax than to spend an evening listening to beautiful island melodies accompanied by graceful hula dancers. Every Friday at 7:30 pm, the Komo Mai to the Courtyard (Come to the Courtyard) program offers a complimentary keiki (children) hula show followed by conch shell blowers and a spectacular Tahitian fireknife dancer. On Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm couples are invited to take part in the Promise Me Again, wedding vow renewal program. Couples lovingly exchange vows and a fresh flower lei during the ceremony and then dance to the Hawaiian Wedding Song - made famous by the Elvis Presley hit movie, "Blue Hawaii" - as they express the rededication of their lives and their love to one another.
