Under the direction of the Vice President, Organizational Development & Human Resources, the Compensation and Benefits Director is responsible for the overall oversight and administration of employee benefits; developing, recommending and implementing approved, new, or modified plans and policies and supervising the administration of existing plans. The Director will also oversee the compensation function; planning, developing and implementing new and revised compensation programs, policies and procedures to support the organization’s goals and competitive practices. The Director provides leadership, vision, and project management related to the design, development, and implementation of improvements to Road Scholar’s overall benefits and compensation programs.
Benefits Management and Administration:
Continually evaluates the effectiveness of Road Scholar’s benefit programs, practices and procedures, including but not limited to health benefits, FMLA, Retirement Plans, life insurance, disability coverage, and Flexible Spending Accounts, in relation to Road Scholar’s strategic objectives; and, in terms of perceived benefit to employees, cost, legislative requirements, organizational culture, and the retention and recruitment of talent.
Responsible for delivering the highest quality of service to Road Scholar employees by providing responsive service, escalated problem solving, and ensuring follow-through on benefits issues;
Project Manager for major initiatives related to benefits programs; develops, proposes, and implements new employee benefit programs to capitalize on competitive opportunities;
Regularly assesses effectiveness and utilization of existing programs; makes recommendations and implements improvements as necessary;
Develops annual benefits budget based on plan design changes and pricing/claims projections;
Oversees and assesses services of benefits consultants, brokers, and other providers;
Maintains benefit plan compliance with federal and state regulations and tax codes;
Partners with Finance leadership to manage all internal and external plan audits;
Routinely assesses process flow around various programs, makes recommendations and implements changes to improve efficiency and accuracy;
Accountable for branding of Road Scholar benefits and communication program to employees;
Accountable for COBRA administration;
Manages all renewals and annual open enrollment;
Works with IT to develop, monitor and refine processes to facilitate the smooth flow of information reported by managers and employees into the HRIS. Accountable for ensuring that all new hires are entered into various data bases accordingly;
Conducts employee benefits orientation, employee satisfaction surveys, workshops and trainings, as well as creates reports.
Compensation Management and Administration:
Continually evaluates the effectiveness of Road Scholar’s compensation programs. Develops, proposes, and implements variable pay programs designed to place greater emphasis on the link between performance and pay. Designs, proposes, and implements effective communication and education strategies for management and employees regarding total compensation and benefits.
Conducts annual market pay analysis, develops market ranges, and present findings, observations, and conclusions to Senior management as required;
Plans, develops, executes the administration of a wide variety of employee compensation programs including base pay, merit, incentive, and equity in an assigned geography or functional unit;
Participates in project assignments which may include analysis of competitive pay practices, economic trends, current market position, cost impact analysis, system enhancements;
Ensures that Road Scholar maintains equity internally, and is externally competitive with wages and salaries;
Advises senior management regarding the development of compensation budgets, strategic plans and annual merit matrices. Prepares Board Committee materials as required;
Participates in updates and enhancements to the annual performance management process;
Ensures accurate, current job descriptions exist to support the organization’s compensation structure and talent acquisition activities;
Manages promotional changes and new hire offer positioning;
Develops and delivers employee communications and training related to compensation programs, policies, and processes;
Ensures compliance with all governmental record-keeping and reporting requirements for compensation programs.
Performs other related and unrelated responsibilities, as needed to support the Human Resources function;
Assists the Vice President, Organizational Development & Human Resources, and HR team with various projects as needed.
Occasional regional office travel required
Education and Experience:
Bachelors’ Degree in Human Resources, Finance, or related field required.
7-10 years Human Resources management experience, specifically overseeing compensation and/or benefit plan design and administration. Experience leading both disciplines for multiple years strongly preferred.
Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) or Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) strongly preferred. PHR/SPHR certification a plus.
Proven knowledge and experience working with benefit programs, brokers and vendors for health, dental, life and AD & D insurance, 403(b) and COBRA is essential.
Proven organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills necessary.
Exceptional customer- service, communication (writing, editing, verbal, and presentation) skills necessary. Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization, both verbally and in writing.
Proven skill with Microsoft Office, Excel and HRIS systems a must.
Experience conducting new hire orientation preferred.
Excellent interpersonal skills (collaboration, advanced problem-solving orientation and decision making, teamwork ) with ability to maintain high level of professionalism and strict confidentiality.
