VOLUNTEERING IN THE COMMUNITY

Members of the Lifelong Learning Institute at Northern Virginia Community College – Manassas, recently learned how they could help others through a course that presented a number of local volunteer opportunities.

The first class had a guest speaker who discussed volunteer opportunities available through the Voluntary Action Center of the Prince William area. The center connects 16,000 volunteers annually to various positions, building the capacity for more effective use of volunteers through outreach and training, and participating in strategic partnerships that benefit both volunteers and community needs.

The second class introduced participants to the Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension Service and told them about various volunteer positions through that agency.

The last class discussed the many volunteer opportunities available through the Prince William Health System and described volunteer positions available through the local Red Cross.
