Taken from the summer 2007 newsletter of the Osher Lifelong
Learning Institute at the University of S, Maine in Portland.
One of the great benefits of being a member of OLLI is that we are
part of a unique network of Senior Colleges around Maine.
There are 16 Senior Colleges from Sanford to Presque Isle which will
honor your OLLI membership and allow you to take classes at their Senior
College by simply paying the course fee.
The Summer is a great time to take advantage of this reciprocity agreement,
especially if you are vacationing or visiting locations near Senior
Colleges that have summer programming. A number of Senior Colleges offer
one-day programming where attendees learn more about the culture, geography
or history of a certain area. And the bonus is that you will enjoy the
very pleasant company of other members of Maine Senor College.
Sunrise Senior College in Machias has cleverly titled their seasonal
offerings “Summer Shorts,” because most are one-day abbreviated
classes or excursions. For 2007, the topics range from learning about
a lobster haul to a two-day guided tour of local artists studies. By
the way, Sunrise has a similar program in January and it, too, is appropriately
named, what else but…”Winter Briefs?” Sunrise Senior
College is affiliated with the University of Maine Machias.
God Lear Institute, the Senior College at the University of Maine Farmington,
has a fascinating array of summer offering from one-day classes to Dog
Sled Construction and an Archaeology Dig to a 4-week class called Drawing
and Sketching Out of Doors.
This is a perfect example of reciprocity at its best…EIN
