The Academy for Learning in Retirement (ALR) in Saratoga Springs, New
York is once again taking part in a community wide program called Saratoga
Reads.
Saratoga Reads is a program designed to foster a shared reading
experience and the exploration of ideas. Saratoga Reads centers on the
community-wide reading of a single book. Organized by Skidmore College
and several community partners, the program has launched its second year.
ALR was an active community partner in year one designing and hosting
a series of lecture and discussion groups on The Kite Runner. The three-part
series opened to the entire community had approximately 100 participants
at each session. ALR intends to, again, be an active community partner.
Nominations for this year’s book selection were made by November
1st, either online or by paper ballot at various locations throughout
Saratoga Springs. Parameters for nomination were that the book must be
a novel written in English, readily available and capable of stimulating
lively discussion and creative programming by interested individuals,
groups and organizations. The public votes on the top ten titles and the
actual program takes place
