Are you interested in taking an art course, learning and discussing international relations, studying ancient Greece or working a potter’s wheel? If so, check out the new link to lifelong learning opportunities on the Sarasota County Library website, Once on the website, click on the hot button for Seniors, and a new logo for Lifelong Learning will put you on the fast track to a variety of opportunities available in Sarasota County. Contact information and links to each organization’s website are provided. Each lifelong learning program links from its website to the library as well.

The creation of this one-stop shop along the internet highway was the idea of a group of volunteers engaged in SCOPE’s community Aging Initiative. The Lifelong Learning Action Team is composed of interested community members and representatives from the library and lifelong learning organizations throughout the county. The team rallied around the question “How can we work together to transform Sarasota County into a lifelong learning community?” They recognized that Sarasota County is rich in lifelong learning opportunities and that their challenge was to help spread the word about them.

Having a one-stop shop link on the county library website is only one way to meet this challenge. The group is also looking at other communication vehicles that target those individuals who don’t haveaccess to a computer or prefer not to use the internet.

Currently there are 11 organizations listed on this link with the expectation that the number will grow. Local nonprofits can complete a brief application if they wish to be listed on this link. Contact Cindy Guest ( or 861-1235) if you would like an application or if you would like more information.

Volunteers through SCOPE continue to work together to develop other strategies for lifelong learning as well as other topics. If you would like to learn more about the Aging Initiative contact Suzanne Gregory ( or 365-8751.)
