OLLI MEMBERS ELIGIBLE TO BECOME CITIZEN DIPLOMATS
Members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University
of N. Florida in Jacksonville have the unique opportunity to reach out,
not only to their community but around the world. The following is taken
from their current newsletter.
Imagine the possibilities…escorting a member of the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police through the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center,
hosting members of the South African parliament in your home for dinner
or maybe sharing stories with a group of Russian visitors over dinner
at a local restaurant. Experiences such as these can be yours as a Citizen
Diplomat of the International Visitor Corps of Jacksonville (IVCJ).
Each year, some 5,000 visitors, recognized as current or emerging leaders
in their countries, are selected by U.S. embassies abroad to come to
the United States under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State.
IVCJ and its volunteer Citizen Diplomats plan and coordinate meetings
for our international guests with community leaders, professional counterparts
and local government officials. This collaboration showcases mutual
respect for different cultures, advocates world peace and promotes community
awareness. Visitor highlights include…
• Home hospitality by IVCJ Citizen Diplomats
• Presentations in our schools and universities
• Two-way learning with civic and professional organizations
• Guided area visits
These visits regularly result in lasting relationships with local business
people, government officials and community members, while increasing
visitors understanding of American democracy, free market economy and
cultural values.
