The OLLI New Horizons Band at Duke University in North Carolina
is part of the New Horizons International Music Association, which
includes over 100 bands in Canada and the United States. This program
is designed to give people 50 years and older a place to learn to
play a musical instrument, pick up that old instrument they played
years ago, or to continue a lifelong pursuit. The OLLI New Horizons
Band program offers musical experiences for every level of player,
from beginners to advanced.
The CONTRA BAND includes both beginner and intermediate players.
This is a fine opportunity for beginners to learn basic skills and
for experienced players to get back in shape. Personal coaching makes
this a great confidence-and skill-building experience.
The CONCERT BAND rehearses twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
This band includes intermediate and advanced musicians. Also included
in the CONCERT BAND program is a one-hour session on Tuesdays for
sectional rehearsals under professional music instructors. The CONCERT
BAND performs several concerts during the year.
The SWING BAND and the DIXIE DUKES are bands for those musicians
looking for a challenge. The SWING BAND plays a variety of big band
music from the likes of Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller. The DIXIE
DUKES play a variety of Dixieland tunes. Both bands meet on Wednesdays
and perform several times during the year at community events.
