On Friday afternoons from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., the Institute
for Learning in Retirement at Bergen Community College in New Jersey
offers members a chance to view classic films and then discuss them.
Here is what they saw this past fall.
Big Deal on Madonna Street – Bungling crooks
led by a bungling Marcello Mastroianni attempt a jewel heist. B-movie
sleeper. Among the funniest films every made.
The Third Man – In postwar Vienna an American
novelist seeks to unravel the mysterious death of a friend. Stars
Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton. Memorable suspense, camera work and
sound track.
Woman in the Dunes – Japanese allegory relates
how an entomologist falls captive to a strange woman living and working
in a sandpit. Winner of Cannes Jury Award.
Broken Blossoms – Silent-film star Lillian
Gish receives abuse from her father but kindness from a gentle Chinese.
A 1919 classic, directed by famed D.W. Griffith, with an “unforgettable
performance from Gish.”
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg – Beautiful Catherine
Deneuve pursues a tender love affair in a musical noted for lush color
stirring melodies by Michel Legrand, and dialogue entirely sung by
the actors. Cannes Best-Film Award.
