This class, given this spring at Wabash Area Lifetime Learning Association, Inc. at Purdue University in West Lexington, Indiana was based on a PBS series about the American presidency. Members examined the five common themes about presidents that have been identified by author Philip Kunhardt, Jr. and sons. The course outline included the following:

Comprise Choices: Franklin Pierce, James A. Garfield, Warren G. Harding

The Professional Politician: Martin Van Buren, James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln

Compromise Choices: Gerald Ford and The Professional Politician: Lyndon Johnson

An Independent Cast of Mind: John Adams, Zachary Taylor, Rutherford B. Hayes

Family Ties: John Quincy Adams, Benjamin Harrison, Franklin D. Roosevelt

An Independent Cast of Mind: Jimmy Carter and Family Ties: John F. Kennedy
