Meet Road Scholar Participant
Elaine B. Murrell
Elaine B. Murrell of Mitchellville, Md., is one of Road Scholar's newest participants. It was a long-dreamed-of opportunity
that convinced her to give Road Scholar a shot. "I had been trying to get to the Panama Canal
for a decade and had collected a huge file of possible itineraries," she says, "But when I
saw the Road Scholar program (Enrichment Voyage Through Central America and the Panama
Canal), I immediately picked up the phone and made my reservation."
"The great part was that I was able to experience not only the Panama Canal, but also many
other beautiful destinations in Central America. It was a super deal, with everything
included at a very reasonable price. My friends couldn't believe my good fortune!"
We asked Elaine to tell us a bit more about her experience with Road Scholar.
Q: Why do you choose to learn with Road Scholar?
A:
I love Road Scholar because it provides worry-free educational travel opportunities. I know that all the details have been or will be taken care of before and during the trip.
Q: What's the most interesting thing you've learned on a Road Scholar program?
A:
Learning all about the history of the Panama Canal: the countries involved in building it, the costs in dollars and human lives and the technological wonder of it all. Also, I really enjoyed the days at sea when I participated in Sir Christopher Ball's outstanding poetry class. I had so much fun tapping into my creative side — we actually had to write poetry!
Q: We offer 6,500 learning adventures in all 50 states and 150 countries around the world. If you could pick just one of those programs, what would it be?
A:
I have always heard that Yosemite National Park is a "must-see" majestic wonder, and I am now trying to decide which of the many Road Scholar Yosemite programs to take. Whichever I choose I know it will be hassle-free and educational, and that I will have fun with like-minded travelers.
Q: Outside of Road Scholar programs, how do you like to challenge your mind?
A:
I am involved in my community, and I love the theater and concerts. Also, my home library is overflowing with books that I have read or am trying to get around to reading. I'm also a member of an Active Seniors Group at a local college.
