Isle Royale, Lake Superior and the Keweenaw Peninsula
Experience the world's largest freshwater sea and its island wilderness national park, along with Isle Royale's geological sibling, the Keweenaw Peninsula. Isle Royale is an archipelago of 400+ islands, 99% of which is legally designated wilderness. The presence of wolves and moose adds to Isle Royale's wild mystique--learn about these island residents and many others as we explore Isle Royale by hiking, boat trips, and talks with experts. Learn about the area's "fire and ice" origins, and its human history that includes prehistoric and 19th century mining, commercial fishing families, lighthouses and shipwrecks, tourist resorts, and eventual wilderness designation. Experience this interconnected ecosystem on guided hikes. As connections within this isolated ecosystem become evident, learn how this "island laboratory" has contributed to our understanding of globally significant issues and interconnectedness.
Walking and hiking up to 4 miles per day. Ferry crossing from Houghton to Isle Royale takes 6 hours.
Program in association with Michigan Technological University.
