History and Culture of Newfoundland's Seaside Communities
Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula offers five centuries of history along miles of unspoiled rugged shoreline. Travel to the eastern most part of North America where your program begins in St. John's. Visit Cape Spear and explore the historic downtown. Then we travel to Harbour Grace and visit small coastal communities where you'll learn and experience the area's people and culture and encounter the centuries old Irish and English traditions and dialect lost in the home country. In the tiny community of Turks Cove hear how generations built their small boats, fishing gear and lived their daily lives. Discover the town of Brigus and National Historic Site Hawthorne Cottage, former home of Captain Robert Bartlett who led Admiral Perry to the North Pole in 1909. Visit the town of Cupids, the first "official" English colony in Canada, celebrating 400 years of settlement in 2010. Learn about early pioneer aviators such as Amelia Earhart. Take time to dance a jig, hear a story and take photos.
Walking on boardwalks, paved or gravel terrain up to .25 miles. Climb 200 steps in 1830's lighthouse at Cape Spear.
Program in association with Routes to Learning Canada.
