The picturesque, stone-built villages of the Cotswold Hills lie in such harmony with their rural surroundings that they appear to be hewn from the earth by nature itself. Yet the hills are not what they seem. Carved and shaped by centuries of human habitation, experience the unique blend of natural and man-made scenery in some of Britain's best-loved landscapes.

Highlights

•

Observe a traditional silversmith at work while studying the Arts and Crafts Movement.

•

A Strategy Officer for the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty explains the history and management of the landscape.

•

Examine the restoration of the Severn and Thames Canal with a member of the Cotswolds Canals Trust.

From Chipping Campden to Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold to Winchcombe, delve into the history of the Cotswolds’ local legends, architecture, wool trade and landscapes on expert-led walks throughout the historic Cotswolds. In Kiftsgate Court, explore gardens created by three generations of women. Returning to Mickleton by foot, learn about the famed vegetables and orchids grown in the rich alluvial soils of the Vale of Evesham. At Kelmscott Manor, explore the home shared by writer and designer William Morris and artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and the life and works of Laurie Lee in Painswick.

Ian Newman

Ian Newman grew up in England’s Tamar Valley, where the proximity of Dartmoor National Park, Bodmin Moor and the coasts of Cornwall and Devon inspired a love of the outdoors. Ian served in the military for over ten years, during which time he traveled extensively, climbed in the Alps and Himalayas and gained a number of formal outdoor leadership qualifications. He and his wife Suzanne now leads walking and hiking programs for Road Scholar participants through their company, Footpath Holidays.
