Help archaeologists excavate ruins on historic San Salvador Island. Believed to be the first landfall of Columbus in 1492, recent digs have unearthed artifacts from Indians, early Spanish explorers and, later, European settlers. Map, dig and sift artifacts in the field and examine your findings in the laboratory with archaeologists. Work with Caribbean Volunteer Expeditions and Gerace Research Center to preserve the rich history of San Salvador Island.

An hour from Nassau by plane, San Salvador is one of the easternmost Bahamian islands. White sand beaches ring this pristine, undeveloped isle at the Atlantic’s edge. Originally settled by Indians migrating from South America, the beaches and hilltops of San Salvador also hold artifacts and ruins from early Spanish explorers and the plantations of British Loyalists who fled America during the revolutionary war. Before venturing into the field, instructors deliver an in-depth orientation to archaeological methodology. On-site discussions reveal the history of San Salvador and the lasting legacies of its past inhabitants. During field trips, explore historic ruins scattered throughout the island and gain insights into the natural history surrounding you on snorkeling and beach excursions.
Lodging: Comfortable, well-equipped field station.
