There are many versions of Alaska — covering over 500,000 square miles, this is a state as varied as it is vast. Across Alaska, grizzlies walk lowland rivers, caribou roam the tundra, Dall sheep cling to mountainsides and glaciers carve the landscape. On this learning adventure, get a taste of this variety, led by expert field educators and rangers who offer insight into Alaska’s ecosystems. Spend five days immersed in Denali National Park, hiking its boreal forests and subarctic habitats. Then, journey south via the Seward Highway, a National Forest Scenic Highway, to reach Kenai Fjords National Park and explore Resurrection Bay on a catamaran-style boat. These expeditions by foot and on the water will bring you up-close to mighty glaciers and the highest mountain in North America and offer ample opportunities to search for the wildlife that call this state home.
Best of all, you'll...
  • Spend five days in Denali National Park hiking through the Alaskan wilderness, gaining insight from expert field educators and searching for grizzly bears, Dall sheep, moose and caribou.
  • Explore the historical and current issues surrounding public lands access, Indigenous sovereignty and resilience and how Alaskans maneuver within federal, state and local legislation.
  • Board a catamaran-style boat to explore Kenai Fjords National Park and Resurrection Bay, watching for and learning about marine mammals, tidewater and alpine glaciers and teeming seabird rookeries.

Chelsie Valetta—born in Buffalo, NY—first visited Alaska in 2012. After a seasonal job in 2017, she made the move permanent, settling in Talkeetna in 2018 with her partner and two spirited huskies. She worked four years at Denali’s South District Ranger Station before joining the Denali Education Center in 2025. Outside of work and directing the Oosik Classic ski race, she enjoys birding with her partner, reading in the sun, identifying plants, and exploring trails with her adventurous pups.
Liz Hahn is originally from Wisconsin, and has lived and worked in some of the most beautiful places in the world, including five different National Parks, a dozen U.S. states, and two other countries but considers Alaska her favorite home. She believes in keeping knowledge and education accessible for all and lifelong learning is her deepest joy. When not collecting passport stamps or hiking hundreds of miles, Liz enjoys foraging, painting, and—above all—reading.
