How Do You Celebrate? Road Scholars Share Their Favorite Holiday Programs
Holidays are a wonderful time to go exploring. As customs and celebrations vary depending on geography, it’s a unique and festive way to learn about new cultures. Not to mention, you get to dictate the climate, whether you want a white Christmas or a warm one.
To get some inspiration, we recently asked our Facebook community about their experiences on their holiday programs, and here’s what they said:
“I spent Christmas in London as a solo traveler, and I had a great time! I met delightful people and we all went out to dinner together several times. On Christmas Day, we had an incredible meal, and later we gathered in the hotel to toast the Queen and watch her holiday speech. I have wonderful memories from that holiday!”

“I participated in the Christmas in France program as solo traveler in 2015. Having lost my husband and then surviving cancer, this was a precious gift. Everyone was so kind and welcoming — a never-to-be-forgotten experience.”

“My first Road Scholar program and first time in France was about 10 years ago over Christmas — Paris, Strasbourg, Colmar and Aix-en-Provence, with many stops along the route to revel in French Christmas traditions and activities. Gingerbread, mulled wine (vin chaud) and Christmas markets … it was a fabulous time and began my obsession with all things French."

“I participated in Colonial Christmas at Williamsburg and it was fabulous! I love early American history and Williamsburg is one of my favorite places — and the town certainly knows how to do Christmas! I recommend this trip to everyone.”

“Christmas in Québec City was wonderful! Partly it was because we love Canada (we’ve done nine Road Scholar programs there), and partly it was the novelty of traveling at Christmastime. My husband was a pastor for two decades, so he always worked on Christmas Eve. It was so much fun — our group celebrated Christmas Day at a huge dinner dance at the Chateau Frontenac.”
